The service was founded in 2001 with just two helicopters, one based at Swansea Airport and the second at Caernarfon airports. Fast forward to 2024 and the Wales Air Ambulance has now flown nearly 50,000 missions to help people in need across Wales from its four airbases, Cardiff Heliport, Caernarfon Airport, Welshpool and the Dafen HQ. The service operates 24/7, 365 days a year, and responds to some of most critical emergencies and accidents across the country. Working alongside the NHS, the air ambulance can get medical expertise to patients in the shortest possible time, and allow patients to access hospital treatment as efficiently as possible, significantly increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes for those involve in an incident. Beyond the air ambulances, the service also provides a number of road based rapid response vehicles, plus patient and bereavement support for those affected with the support of two patient liaison nurses. The operation of the air ambulances and road vehicles is entirely charity funded and requires over £11m per year to operate. Without the support of the public this service would not be possible!
