The next challenge!
Following on from the original Whisky Ventures Ride, I felt more could be done. Although Scotland may be the most famous country in the world for its whisky, there are many more distilleries in the UK than just those north of the border. I was considering taking on the challenge of another home nation, but I was not sure which one to target. Then after a conversion (and a little gentle persuasion) from a whisky podcaster in Wales, I decided the next target should be a round of the Welsh Distilleries. With only ten operational single-malt distilleries, it is definitely a shorter challenge than the Scottish ride, therefore, it needed to be a shorter timeframe, to make sure it does remain 'a challenge'.
As with the original challenge, I wanted to continue my support for the incredible air ambulance charities we have in the UK. Sadly they have to operate as charities due to a lack of central funding; therefore, with this challenge being in Wales, it seemed fitting to keep the support local as well, supporting the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.
The ride began in the Welsh capital at the Cardiff Heliport, where the Welsh Air Ambulance has its Cardiff base, and finished approximately 380miles/615km later in Holyhead. The route travelled via all ten of the Welsh distilleries and the four Welsh Air Ambulance bases over one week.
As with the original ride there were two parts to my fundraising; the first, donation page through an online platform, and the second, a charity auction for the bottles of whisky (plus rum and gin) kindly donated by the distilleries across Wales.
